Has anyone tried to get a drivers license since October 1?
I don’t know if it is just New Mexico, but the requirements have changed radically . This is what I faced when getting a driver’s permit for my 15 year old child.
For your ID–A passport and birth certificate are not adequate,
You must have your SS card, or last year’s tax return, other years will not do.
To prove state residency—2 items required, bank statement, utility bill, mortgage document, vehicle registration, or enrollment documentation from school.
Proof of my residency status, 2 bills with my physical address.
Sworn statement by me that she is my child and lives with me.
Proof from the school that the child is taking Driver’s ed, in the form of a recipt for payment of the 300.00 that drivers ed now costs.
I have had to take my 15 year old child out of school twice, and I still havn’t gotten her permit. None of this is made common knowledge, and you have to keep going back.
Does anyone else think that enough is enough?
To Jerry C–That is a good question. I have no idea how they get around that, unless the kids are on medicaid, that card also qualifies as an ID.

WOW!! That’s pretty deep! Very involved! I was out of the USA for over 6 years and let my d/l expire as there was no need for a d/l where I was. When I came back to the USA last year I decided, being in America, I needed a d/l. I was in a different state from the one I originally left out of and was a bit concerned b/c I didn’t have an old d/l to show. The DMV gave me a simple 20 question pc type test (no actual driving!) asked for my ID, which was my military ID card, and I established my residence (which is a local hotel) with one piece of mail I got sent to me from my “off-shore” bank, we had some conversation and viola!! I am now licensed for the next 4 years!! Cost me a whole $20 plus a filing fee of $5!
BTW: I bought a new car (on payments) and got full coverage insurance over the phone from the dealer’s desk the same day! I don’t know about enough being enough but I know it’s good to be in America!

How can they force the requirement of drivers ed when so many people home school their kids?

I’ve never heard of that. My daughter got her permit in 2004 and all she had to do was take a written test. That was it. Then she started drivers ed the next year in high school. The last time I renewed my license they gave me one for 7 more years. So, no, we haven’t had any problems like that where we live.
